Thomas writes:\u003cbr\u003e\n“After using various speaker cables for many years without paying much attention to the type of cable, I stumbled upon a discovery by chance: I was using an inexpensive Marshall speaker cable with molded plastic connectors and noticed that my sound was no longer stiff, but round and yet airy. Of course, I immediately wanted to get to the bottom of this. I tested everything imaginable: solid copper cables, normal Hi-Fi speaker cables, silver-plated cables, cables with different cross-sections, and of course, the quality cables from well-known brands. I found that all these cables sounded more or less neutral and that the sound was never as round as with the cheap, short Marshall cable. It lacked the “mojo” that makes the sound homogeneously contained and, moreover, detached from the cabinet.\u003cbr\u003e\nAfter attending a workshop with a columnist from a guitar magazine, I told him about my discovery, and we realized that we had similar experiences in this regard. He then sent me a piece of a 1953 Fender power cord. I then soldered jack plugs onto this cable and used it as a speaker cable. I found that the cable delivered the warmth and the round, balanced sound I had always been looking for. After analyzing the number and nature of the internal conductors of the cable, I started looking for a similar cable. And lo and behold, I found a cable with a slightly larger cross-section that achieved exactly the sound I was looking for, even at a greater length, without significant power loss.\u003cbr\u003e\nAnother insight occurred to me when I had to shorten a guitar cable multiple times. After the third shortening of the cable, an incredible sound change suddenly occurred. Due to the mere change in capacitance caused by the shorter length, I could not explain this significant sonic difference. It was only many years later that I learned of a theory, unknown to me until then, that states there are certain cable lengths at which a cable simply sounds different.
